Dettori back on Classic trail with Sandiva

FRANKIE DETTORI’S involvement for Sheikh Joaan Al Thani in either of the season’s first two Classics depends on the performance of Sandiva in today’s Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes, as the filly who helped cement his association with the founder of Al Shaqab Racing has her Qipco 1,000 Guineas credentials put to the test.

Dettori is without a British win on turf this year and Sandiva is one of only two booked rides for him at the two-day Craven meeting, but on the Richard Fahey-trained filly he has a chance to grab his first Group victory of the campaign, having come within a head of doing so on Al Thakhira in Saturday’s Fred Darling Stakes.

Al Thakhira’s likely destination is the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, but if Sandiva can win today in a style that suggests she would get a mile she would earn Dettori another shot at the race in which he celebrated the last of his 14 British Classic wins on Blue Bunting in 2011.

Harry Herbert, racing manager to Al Shaqab Racing, owner of Sandiva, said: “Richard [Fahey] is very pleased with her. She’s working very well and will love the ground – we’re trying to avoid soft with her. Ultimately, the question mark is the trip. She’s ready to go. Put a line through Longchamp – the combination of soft ground and mile trip was not her bag as a two-year-old. We’ll learn where we’re headed after this.”
